Republicans Support Lobbying

Today the Republican controlled Senate defeated a Democratic Bill that would have been a huge blow to many lobbyists and the super-rich companies paying them. It would have made much of the wining and dining they offer Senators illegal and would have made illegal the vacations and other trips that lobbyists use to bribe senators illegally.

Senate Republicans were not willing to give up these gifts even though the public knows that these are just bribes to persuade the lawmakers to look more favorably at their employers causes. Democracy in America has been a joke for some time now, I have to give it to the Senate Republicans for being honest enough to show the American citizens what their true intentions are.

So much for all that talk about curbing abuse by elected officials and lobbyists that was being talked about several weeks ago when the connections between the Bush administration was front page news.

You shouldn't be surprised though. This is why the government was divided into three parts, the Administrative, Legislative and Legal branches. It was supposed to distribute power and influences. What we are seeing is just the result of one political party having control of all three. You get abuses of power, no matter which party is in control. It just so happens that the Republicans have this monopoly now and their interests tend to follow a more money hungry approach to politics.

If the Democrats were in control as the Republicans are, you would get similar abuses. They would have raised vehicle gas mileage and emission standards. This would allow us to breathe cleaner air and spend less money on gas for our cars. They would have set aside more land for government uses, like parks and recreation. They probably would not have invaded Iraq as hastily as Republicans did, which would have saved us billions of dollars that could have been used to secure our ports and borders, fund education and maybe even make the levees stronger after Katrina instead of building new levees to only withstand a category three hurricane even though those failed last time.
