Senate Republicans Reject Raising Minimum Wage

The Republican controlled Senate today rejected a Democratic bill to raise minimum wage to $7.25 an hour. They say that this could lead to a loss of jobs and is generally bad for our economy and business in general. Many Democrats disagree with their opinion and have vowed to raise minimum wage if they regain control of the Senate after the fall elections.

It is true that raising the minimum wage could have a negative impact on businesses as a whole, but it wouldn't be that hard of a hit. The majority of American employees are already making more than the current minimum of $5.15 an hour. It is not as if every employee will be getting a $2.10 raise.

My suggestion would be to have all Senators live on the current minimum wage for the next four months and then have another vote on this issue. There is not one single Senator that is making minimum wage. I feel that if they had to live on $5.15 an hour then they would be voting on an issue that they have been educated about. It could be a great learning experience for some of them.

The Senate vote to not raise the minimum wage is actually a gift to many businesses. This ensures that these employees will instead be living on welfare and other government benefits. It essentially allows businesses to subsidize their employees pay with government benefits. This actually encourages "Big Government" to thrive and grow. When you factor in inflation, it actually means that as prices rise the government has to pay more money to support these government benefits. This forces the government to collect more tax money, essentially raising taxes to support businesses that will not pay their employees a wage that its employees can actually live on.

It appears in the end the "New" Republican Party is a supporter of "Big Government." This is a dramatic switch from the "Small Government" Republicans of a few years ago.
