American Terrorists

This is just a thought article. It is intended to get people to think. Everything that follows is hypothetical.

The year is 2010 and the United States has been invaded by France. The French took over our country because they did not agree with our political leaders. They felt that the United States government was exerting too much influence on the other countries of the world. This is why they decided to invade our country and abolish our government and set up a new government that was more like the French government. If this sounds a little familiar, it should. It is vaguely similar to the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

If this were to happen, what would you do? Would you applaud the invasion and accept them with open arms? Were you tired of the old government and ready for a change anyways? Some people honestly feel this way when it comes to the U.S. government.

On the other hand, many of us do not. We are the ones who would resist the foreign invaders. We would protest this illegal action and demand they leave. If they did not listen to us, many of us would then resort to other means of trying to drive out the French. This would definitely lead to creating armed forces to fight the French in an attempt to drive them out. The down side of this is that we would be labeled as terrorists and unless the French were driven out before they set up the government they want we would never be free.

The French would hunt us down to kill us. The new government that the French created would also be on their side. We would be wanted by both parties. As a result of us standing up and defending our country we would be labeled as terrorists, traitors and criminals. They would stop at almost nothing to exterminate us. Just for the simple fact that we stood by our rights and duties as American citizens we will never be free again. We will be forever cast into the shadows living in fear that we will be recognized and killed in the future. Since we stood up for our country we have given up our freedom.

OK, back to reality now.

This is happening in Iraq as we speak. Many of the people that we are calling terrorists today are simply Iraqi citizens that are trying to defend the country from the invaders. Many of them feel the same as we would if we were invaded by the French, or anyone else for that matter.

When the new Iraq government offers amnesty to these citizens, it is not as if they are offering Bin Laden amnesty. Many of the "terrorists" as we like to call them, simply are opposed to the actions of the U.S. government. They have never had a single ambition in their lives that involved coming to America and killing or attacking us. After we leave their country they will still be bitter and hate us, but that does not mean that they will decide to attack us or that they are willing to give their lives to come to America and wage a "Holy War" against us.

I've been saying this for months. The problem is there are few people who truly "get" it.

Every time I have said anything even hinting that perhaps the terrorists have a just case, even if their methods seem extremist, I am attacked for being a sympathizer.

Well, is it not the mark of a truly civilized person to be able to understand the position of one's enemy? (I hate the word "enemy" in this case, because I don't think it's a fair label)

I mean, 9/11 did not happen because the U.S. was just sitting over here, minding its own business, not hurting anyone. The Iraqi insurgency isn't happening because our troops are over there making things better for the Iraqi people.

To me, it's obvious. Why don't more people make this connection?
