Republican Congress To Sue Bush Administration

It was reported today that Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa. is planning to present a bill that will enable the Senate to sue President Bush over signing statements. This issue seems to be causing widespread dissatisfaction with both Republicans and Democrats.

Signing statements are basically a note that the president adds when he signs bills into law. It allows him to clarify laws or express opinions concerning these bills. The disturbing issue here is that President Bush is using these signing statements to tell Congress that he has no intention of following the laws that Congress passes. This just happens to be a violation of the Constitution of the United States.

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."

This quote is from The Presidential Oath of Office that George W. Bush swore to follow when he accepted the position of President. His violation of this oath should require the House and Senate to initiate and proceed with impeachment proceedings. It is not known if this is a step in that direction or if it is a Congress that is in turn refusing to follow its Constitutional obligations.

Only time will tell if our government will stand and properly fulfill their responsibilities or if this is just a ploy to not follow their own oaths. If they fail on this issue, then our entire government has officially failed and the Constitution from this point forward will have failed in it's goal to create a fair government that is supposed to be for the people.
