Tom Delay Gives Up

Tom Delay has given up on his chances of being able to win re-election and will soon announce that he will not seek re-election to the House of Representatives in 2006. The pressure has been increasing for him to make this announcement for quite some time and now he realizes it is in the best interest of the Republican party to withdrawal from the race.

His announcement will leave a hole for Texas Republicans to fill, but this way the Republican party will have more time to get a new candidate. It will also allow more time for the new candidate to gain more recognition before the fall elections. Tom Campbell was the runner up in the recent primary election and it is very plausible that he could step up and take Delay's place.

Democrats will claim this as a victory, but it might not be a knockout. The Republican party is glad to see Delay leaving, if only because of the attention his actions have caused. The Republican party is hoping that his announcement will give them more time to focus on their agenda instead of Delay's court proceedings. Republicans are hoping to use this as a opportunity to try to take some attention away from Delay and focus it on current issues and their new candidate.
